Concept Statement
This set design emphasizes the role industrialism played in the 1920s while deconstructing the images of luxury that have prevailed as the caricatures of the era. A darker set with that introduces bursts of color for certain locations fulfills this concept by casting the settings in Gatsby as exceptions and out of place in the industrial city. The arches are combinations of classical pillars, art deco, and cast iron. This trio represents clashing culture, values, and ideology in the 1920s and provide an industrial backdrop to the action of the play.
