Concept Statementn each production of Hamlet, the director has the choice of whether or not to show the Ghost. This decision comments on Hamlet’s perceived sanity and influences the audience’s understanding of the motivations for his actions in later scenes. This costume design aims to show a physical representation of the Ghost that sends the same message as the decision to keep the actor offstage. Instead of the phantom being a manifestation of the late king’s spirit, this design conveys the idea that the Ghost is simply a projection of Hamlet’s fears and desires.
To the left is an image that combines the two layers of the costume design: an interior layer that replicates the costume of Hamlet himself, and the outer layer, which acts as the reflective armor of the ghost. The material of the outer layer, like privacy window film, is able to be both reflective and transparent depending on the lighting used. |
